Seventy-five to eighty percent (75-80%) of chronic, non-communicable diseases are preventable. Chronic diseases such as hypertension ( high blood pressure) , diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) and obesity are on the rise across the globe. The bad news is: our lifestyle is killing is! The good news is: with information and behavior change, we have the power to reverse this trend.
A biometric or preventive health screening is designed to identify and/or monitor such chronic conditions . It typically involves measuring your weight and height to determine your BODY MASS INDEX ( BMI). Your BMI is one way to determine whether you are normal weight, overweight, obese or morbidly obese. The screening will also typically include a cholesterol measurement, blood pressure reading and fasting glucose ( “sugar”) to screen for diabetes.
A biometric screening is an effective, affordable way to monitor your health every 1-2 years. Periodic screening opens the door to early detection, intervention, and improved concerns. One of the best and simplest words of advice I can give you: FOCUS ON A HEALTHY DIET ( avoiding processed foods, high salt sugar and saturated fat), ROUTINE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ( an active lifestyle – physical activity that you enjoy because if you don’t like it- you won’t sustain it) and maintenance of your “healthy weight” . If you focus on the healthy behaviors, the healthy weight will be maintained. Focus on the healthy behaviors – long term- and the healthy weight will follow. Those pounds creep up slowly, year by year, and with the unhealthy weight comes the greater risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, cardiovascular/heart disease and cancer.
